چکیده

Results Across all species, trophic position was positively related to maximum length (r = 0.194, b = 0.065, P < 0.0001), meaning that a one-level increase in trophic level was associated with an increase in maximum length by a factor of 183. On average, fishes in orders that showed significantly positive trophic level–body size relations [mean = 51.6 cm 11.8 (95% confidence interval, CI)] were 86 cm smaller than fishes in orders that showed no relation [mean = 137.1 cm 50.3 (95% CI), P < 0.01]. A separate slopes model ANCOVA revealed that maximum length and trophic level were positively correlated for 47% (27 of 57) of orders, with two more orders showing marginally non-significant positive relations; no significant negative correlations were observed. The full model (order ¥ body size) explained 37% of the variation between body size and trophic position (P < 0.0001).

Feeding habits and trophic level of Himantura gerrardi (Elasmobranchii; Dasyatidae) in northern Oman Sea: effects of sex and size class

The feeding habits and trophic level of Himantura gerrardi were studied according to sex and size classes of 80 individuals obtained using bottom trawl between May and December 2014 from the Oman Sea. Collected specimens were divided into three size classes (small<38 cm, medium 38-58 cm and large>58 cm) based on disk width. Prey was identified in seven main zoological categories, where crustace...

Metal bioaccumulation in representative organisms from different trophic levels of the Caspian Sea

The bioaccumulations of metals Cu, Cd, Ni, Cr, Co, Mn, Zn and Fe were measured in bivalves, Cerastoderma glucaum, and four species of fishes including Alburnus chalcoides, Liza aurata, Rutilus frisii and Sander lucioperca from various trophic levels of the Caspian food web. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Co and Ni in most samples of fish were below the detection limits; while the concentrations ...

Characterizing the trophic niches of stocked and resident cyprinid fishes: consistency in partitioning over time, space and body sizes

Hatchery-reared fish are commonly stocked into freshwaters to enhance recreational angling. As these fishes are often of high trophic position and attain relatively large sizes, they potentially interact with functionally similar resident fishes and modify food-web structure. Hatchery-reared barbel Barbus barbus are frequently stocked to enhance riverine cyprinid fish communities in Europe; the...
